The Colorado Avalanche clinched a berth in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 5 on Tuesday night. Mikko Rantanen netted two crucial goals in the third period, propelling the Avalanche to the series win.
Nathan MacKinnon opened the scoring for the Avalanche in the first period, but the Jets responded with two goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Avalanche regained momentum in the third period with consecutive goals by Rantanen and Valeri Nichushkin, followed by an empty-netter from MacKinnon.
The Avalanche will now face the winner of the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings series in the second round. The start date for that series has yet to be announced.
